Mechanical waves

Mechanical waves

There are two types of mechanical waves
1.Longitudinal wave and
2. Transverse wave

1.Longitudinal wave :
The wave is said to be longitudinal if the particles of the medium vibrate in the direction of propagation of wave. for e. g. sound, waves produced in spring.
The longitudinal wave propagates through a medium in the form of alternate compression and rarefactions. The separation between two consecutive compression or rarefactions is called wavelength. It exhibits the interference and diffraction but doesn't exhibit polarization . It is also known as pressure wave.

2. Transverse wave :
The wave is said to be transverse if the particles of the medium vibrate in the direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation of wave. for e.g. waves produced at the surface of water .
The transverse wave propagates through a medium in the form of alternate crests and troughs. The separation between two consecutive crests or troughs is called wavelength.
The transverse wave exhibits interference, diffraction and polarization.
